The Lagos State Government has announced an ambitious security upgrade that will see surveillance drones deployed across the state to strengthen intelligence gathering and improve rapid response to crime.

The initiative was unveiled on Monday during a press briefing marking the first 100 days in office of Mr. Ayodele Ogunsan, Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF).

Ogunsan said the deployment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, represents a strategic shift toward technology-driven policing in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

According to him, discussions are ongoing to formalise a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian Air Force and the Nigeria Police Force Airwing to enable coordinated air-based security operations.

He explained that the drones will expand surveillance coverage across critical areas of the state, enhance intelligence collection, and significantly improve inter-agency coordination.

“Lagos, as Nigeria’s economic nerve centre, requires modern security architecture. Continuous investment in technology is essential to protect lives, businesses, and public infrastructure,” Ogunsan stated.

Reviewing progress made within his first 100 days, Ogunsan disclosed that the Trust Fund has strengthened its financial base through targeted fundraising initiatives and deeper stakeholder engagement.

He revealed that 80 new patrol and operational vehicles have been deployed statewide to boost police visibility and shorten emergency response times.

In addition, a private donor has pledged to construct a permanent office complex for the agency, a development expected to enhance operational efficiency. The Trust Fund is also rehabilitating abandoned Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), which will be returned to active service upon completion.

Beyond equipment upgrades, Ogunsan said statewide training programmes are being planned for security personnel, with a focus on professionalism, tactical competence, and improved service delivery.

Security analysts say the introduction of surveillance drones signals a broader reform effort aimed at modernising Lagos’ security framework.

By integrating aerial monitoring with ground operations, authorities hope to deter criminal activity, improve evidence gathering, and ensure quicker deployment of security forces during emergencies.

With Lagos continuing to expand as Africa’s largest urban economy, officials argue that embracing advanced surveillance technology is critical to maintaining stability and investor confidence.
