Lawmakers in Rivers State House of Assembly have renewed hostilities against Governor Sim Fubara. The Speaker of the State Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, triggered the salvo against with criticism of Governor Fubara over education funding in the state.

Thereafter, Amaewhule declared his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), without vacation of his seat in the Assembly.

Martin Amaewhule had declared: “Distinguished colleagues, let me announce to the honourable members that your speaker has decided, and has written to my ward chairman, of my decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). “Distinguished colleagues, APC is my new party. I will do all that is needed to be done towards ensuring that the party card of the All Progressives Congress is issued to me in no time.”

Subsequently, the 16 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly defected to the APC; and immediately proceeded on recess to resume January 26. The vacation would prevent Governor Fubara from presenting the 2026 budget to the House before the end of 2025. The governor was to present the budget this December.

The lawmakers were said to have expressed concerns over the continuous delay of Governor Fubara to present a new list of commissioners for screening.
