Alisson Becker’s concerns about the football calendar are shared by many players and managers across Europe. The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) has also called for changes to the schedule, citing the increased risk of injuries and burnout among players.
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has expressed concerns about the growing number of football matches and the lack of player input in scheduling decisions.
Ahead of the start of the expanded Champions League this week, Alisson emphasized the need for safeguards to protect players from excessive workloads.
“Sometimes nobody asks the players what they think about adding more games,” Alisson told reporters.
“Maybe our opinion doesn’t matter, but everybody knows what we think about having more games.
Everybody’s tired of that.”
With Liverpool potentially facing over 60 matches this season, Alisson called for a collaborative approach between all stakeholders, including players, to address the issue.
He argued that the current schedule is unsustainable and could negatively impact player performance.
“If you are tired, you cannot compete at a high level,” Alisson said. “What I want is to give my best in all the games I play.
At the moment it doesn’t look like we are close to a solution for football’s sake and for the players’ sake.”
Liverpool manager Arne Slot acknowledged the potentialchallenges of the new Champions League format but expressed optimism about its ability to deliver exciting matches.
However, he also emphasized the need to evaluate the impact on players’ workload.
