The Spanish transfer window remains open even after the Premier League deadline ends on Thursday but United will not fear a serious bid creating a major issue.
The hope is that Real Madrid’s bizarre offer for Pogba, 26 – who is at the peak of his powers and a World Cup winner – will leave all parties convinced that the Spanish club are not prepared to put their money where their mouth is.
It comes on the day United completed their £80m move for England defender Harry Maguire and that could end up being their final piece of business – even if, as expected, Romelu Lukaku leaves Old Trafford.
Inter Milan are now in pole position to sign Lukaku after the swap deal involving Juventus star Paulo Dybala collapsed with United baulking at the Argentina star’s wages and not believing he was fully committed to the move.
