Atletico Madrid have found their new right-back in the form of Tottenham Hotspur defender Kieran Trippier, who has agreed to a four-year deal with Los Rojiblancos and will join for around 30 million euros.
Los Rojiblancos had initially intended to try and bring Nelson Semedo to the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano, but Barcelona refused to give him up as part of the negotiations which saw Antoine Griezmann move to the Catalan side. As such, they turned their attention towards the Englishman.
Trippier will arrive in Madrid either on Tuesday or Wednesday morning to undergo his medical examinations, and after he will join Atletico’s pre-season training camp in Los Angeles de San Rafael.
Despite being an undisputed starter for much of Mauricio Pochettino’s reign in charge of Spurs, Trippier had a down season last year, having performed well at the 2018 World Cup.
After the arrival of Mario Hermoso and the possible signing of James Rodriguez, the only position that Atletico urgently needed to address was right-back. Now, Trippier will compete with Santiago Arias for that position in Diego Simeone’s side.
