Man arrested for allegedly setting father on fire, victim dies in hospital

The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man, Kabiru Nuhu, for allegedly setting his 60-year-old father ablaze in Kazaure Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

In a statement on Sunday, Police Public Relations Officer Shi’isu Adam said the suspect reportedly poured a flammable liquid on his father before igniting him.

“The investigation so far indicates that the suspect poured a suspected petroleum substance on the victim and set him on fire,” he said.

The incident occurred on April 1, 2026, at around 6:30 a.m. in Magama Quarters, Kazaure town. The police responded quickly after receiving a distress report from a local resident, Lokon Malamai, and found the father in critical condition. The suspect also sustained fresh burns and injuries on his forehead, arms, and toes.

The injured father was rushed to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment. Kabiru Nuhu has been taken into police custody and is expected to be charged with patricide. He will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse for further investigation and prosecution.

Haruna Yahaya, the Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State, condemned the act and called for calm. He stated, “We are working to establish the motive behind the attack, and justice will be served.”

He also urged residents to resolve disputes peacefully and to report early warning signs of domestic violence to security agencies.

Adam emphasized that the police command remains committed to maintaining law and order across the state, assuring that all necessary measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents.
