There was a relative mix-up at the House of Representatives of the Nigerian National Assembly on Thursday after the House Majority Leader, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, wailed over the intractable insecurity in the country and advocated that Nigerian citizens should be allowed to carry guns for self-defence. The deliberations at the Thursday of the House on the insecurity in the country witnessed overwhelming condemnation of the insecurity crisis in several parts of Nigeria.
However, some lawmakers did not subscribe to legalizing the acquisition of arms by citizens in the country. The lawmakers, therefore, urged Nigerians to disregard the suggestion of the House Majority Leader. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, that Nigerians should be allowed to bear arms.
The House Spokesman, Benjamin Kalu, in a media interaction in Abuja after plenary on Thursday, enjoined Nigerians not to bear arms or resort to self help in the circumstance of security collapse in the country. Kalu insisted that the Constitution would be amended before Nigerians can carry arms in defence of their lives and properties.
The lawmakers emphasized that the statement of the House Majority Leader was a personal opinion and not the resolution of the House, noting that the members did not support the idea.
