A photo of Seyi Tinubu sitting at the feet of a monarch has stirred a wave of reactions on Twitter.

Seyi is the son of Bola Tinubu, the 2023 presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

A photo of him surfaced where he is spotted sitting at the feet of Rilwan Babatunde Osuolale Aremu Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos.

A Twitter user who put out the photo praised Seyi for exhibiting what he described as “cultural reverence”.

He said Seyi was offered a seat beside the traditional ruler but he declined and instead “denigrated” himself to sit at his feet.

“Seyi Tinubu @STinubu was offered a seat beside the king and his princess yesterday but he declined and decided to get himself denigrated before the king,” the Twitter user wrote.

“This is the first time we will be having a very lenient; intellectually and culturally behaved first son as a nation.”

The picture and the Twitter user’s choice of words have since stirred a heated backlash online.

While some users described it as a politically motivated stunt to portray his father in a positive light and attract public support ahead of the 2023 elections, others simply dismissed the tweet as funny.

One user asked how the “stunt” lowers poverty and the price of staple foods like garri in the market.

Another user stated that such a display of “humility” wouldn’t sway voters, come 2023.

A user shared a different picture showing Seyi tugging at the beard of the same traditional ruler.

“So touching. I observed he did not remove his cap. Anyway, in keeping with humility, he should speak sincerely to his father who has nothing more to offer in the public sphere of governance in Nigeria. It is a good start & we look forward to him making restitutions to Lagos,” one user wrote.
