The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, has officially resigned from her position just seven weeks after assuming leadership.

Meranda made the announcement during plenary on Monday, March 3, 2025, citing the need to align with the directives of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party in the state.

Her resignation comes amid ongoing political realignments within the Lagos legislative arm.

During the plenary session, lawmakers took turns to commend Meranda for her strength, humility, and commitment to party discipline, acknowledging her role in maintaining peace and stability within the Assembly during her brief tenure.

Although the specific reasons for her resignation were not fully disclosed, sources within the Assembly indicate that the decision was influenced by internal party agreements aimed at ensuring political harmony within the state’s legislative leadership structure.

Lawmakers praised the outgoing Speaker for her inclusive leadership style, which they described as instrumental in maintaining unity within the House.

Speaking at the session, Majority Leader, Hon. Noheem Adams, lauded Meranda for prioritizing the Assembly’s stability and adhering to the APC’s internal structures.

“She has demonstrated selflessness and respect for the rule of law and party supremacy. Her brief time as Speaker was marked by significant progress, and we appreciate her leadership,” Adams said.

Similarly, Deputy Speaker, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, described Meranda as a “team player” who worked tirelessly to ensure smooth legislative operations.

“We acknowledge her sacrifice and unwavering loyalty to the party’s principles. She has set a remarkable example of service and discipline,” Yishawu noted.

Following Meranda’s resignation, the Assembly is expected to elect a new Speaker in the coming days, with intense consultations already underway among lawmakers and party stakeholders.

Meanwhile, Meranda will continue to serve as a member of the House, representing her constituency.

Her resignation has further fueled speculations about potential leadership restructuring within the Lagos State political landscape.

The Lagos State House of Assembly, known for its strategic legislative influence in Nigeria, has had several leadership changes over the years, often shaped by political negotiations within the APC-led government.

As developments unfold, political analysts believe Meranda’s resignation signals a larger power recalibration within Lagos politics, especially as the state prepares for upcoming elections and party congresses.

Mojisola Meranda was sworn in as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly in January 2025, following the removal of the previous Speaker due to party-led restructuring.

Her tenure, though short-lived, was marked by attempts to foster inclusivity and legislative efficiency.

As Lagos navigates this leadership transition, stakeholders are watching closely to see how the political dynamics within the Assembly evolve in the coming weeks.
