The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a stern warning to the public following alarming results from recent laboratory tests on bread samples sold across Nigeria.
The tests revealed significant safety concerns, as many bread products failed to meet acceptable health standards.
During a press briefing on Monday, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reported that routine inspections uncovered widespread use of unauthorized and potentially harmful substances in bread production.
Notably, some samples contained excessive levels of potassium bromate, a preservative banned in many countries for its cancer-causing properties. Other harmful chemicals and impurities were also detected.
“This is deeply concerning,” Prof. Adeyeye stated. “Bread is a staple food for millions of Nigerians, and it’s unacceptable that safety and quality are being compromised. We urge the public to be vigilant about the bread they buy.”
In response, NAFDAC has vowed to increase its regulatory efforts, including more frequent inspections and stricter enforcement of food safety standards.

The agency also plans to take legal action against non-compliant manufacturers, potentially shutting down facilities that violate regulations.
Consumers are advised to report suspicious bread products to NAFDAC and to purchase only those with clear labeling and NAFDAC registration numbers.
Meanwhile, some bread manufacturers are reviewing their production processes, while the Bakers Association of Nigeria has called an emergency meeting to address the issue.
NAFDAC’s warning underscores ongoing challenges in ensuring food safety in Nigeria and highlights the need for stronger enforcement to protect public health. The agency remains committed to safeguarding the food supply and upholding the highest standards of consumer protection.
