Nation bids farewell to Maj.-Gen. Paul Omu with full military honours

The Isoko Nation, military establishment and prominent Nigerians on Saturday paid their final respects to the late Maj.-Gen. Paul Ufuoma Omu (rtd.), a distinguished soldier, statesman and former military governor of Cross River State, during a solemn burial ceremony marked with full military honours.

The President General of the Isoko Development Union (IDU), Prof. Chris Akpotu, led a high-powered IDU delegation to honour the late icon.

Senior military officers, political leaders, traditional rulers and notable figures from various sectors were also present to celebrate the life of the retired General, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most respected military personalities.

Speaking on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, Major-General Oluwafemi Williams described the late Omu as “an exceptionally well-informed senior officer” whose calm disposition and professionalism remained consistent throughout his military career.

He recalled Omu’s exemplary leadership as the military governor of Cross River State, praising his diligence, discipline and integrity.

“In every appointment he held, he demonstrated unwavering determination to achieve set objectives. He was disciplined, confident and endowed with impeccable integrity,” Maj.-Gen. Williams said, noting that the Nigerian Army holds his memory in high esteem.

The interment ceremony featured full military rites, including a ceremonial guard, slow march procession and the symbolic presentation of the national flag to the family.

Troops also performed the traditional 21-gun salute reserved for distinguished officers, offering a dignified final honour to a man celebrated for courage and service.

Family members, community leaders and clerics delivered heartfelt tributes, describing the late General as a humble leader, philanthropist and community pillar who remained deeply devoted to Igbide and the Isoko Nation even after his retirement.

Speakers highlighted his mentorship of younger generations and his unwavering support for development initiatives across Isoko land.

Maj.-Gen. Paul Ufuoma Omu is survived by his wife, Senator Stella Omu, children, grandchildren and an extended family.

With his burial, Igbide, the Isoko Nation and Nigeria bid farewell to a patriotic soldier and statesman whose legacy of service, unity and integrity is expected to endure for generations.
