As the World Broadband Congress approaches on October 8, 2024, in Paris, industry experts are highlighting the crucial role that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will play at the global event. With a theme of

“Unlock the Future of Telecom,” the Congress will bring together telecom leaders, innovators, and policymakers to discuss advancements and strategies shaping the sector’s future. Among the key participants, the NCC’s leadership in Africa’s telecom revolution is drawing global attention.

Telecommunications expert Dr. Akin Ojo praised the NCC’s achievements in broadband expansion, noting, “The NCC’s efforts in improving Nigeria’s digital infrastructure have positioned it as a leader in Africa’s telecom industry. Their presence at this Congress will show the world how emerging markets can leverage innovative regulatory policies and partnerships to drive connectivity.”

The NCC’s participation will focus on sharing Nigeria’s success in broadband penetration, driven by the National Broadband Plan (2020-2025), which aims to achieve 70% broadband coverage by 2025.

The Commission will highlight its leadership in rolling out 5G networks, with telecommunications analyst Ijeoma Eke pointing out, “Nigeria’s early adoption of 5G has opened doors for new opportunities in digital innovation and economic growth, and the NCC’s proactive approach has been key.”

A central theme of the NCC’s presentation will be bridging the digital divide. According to the Commission, extending high-speed internet access to underserved communities remains a top priority.

The Congress will serve as a platform for the NCC to discuss its strategies for fostering digital inclusion, a goal that resonates with global efforts to achieve equitable connectivity.

Security expert Chidi Nwankwo emphasized that the NCC’s approach to cybersecurity, another focal point at the Congress, sets an example for regulatory frameworks worldwide.

“In the age of cyberattacks, the NCC has made significant strides in protecting Nigeria’s digital ecosystem. Their collaboration with the Nigeria Computer Emergency Response Team has enhanced the country’s resilience, making it a leader in cybersecurity across Africa,” Nwankwo explained.

By engaging in discussions with global industry leaders, the NCC is expected to shape global telecom policies. Experts believe the Commission’s role in fostering broadband growth and driving 5G development will influence how emerging markets adapt to new technologies.

As the telecom world looks towards the future, the NCC’s participation at the World Broadband Congress reinforces its standing as a telecom leader, both in Africa and on the global stage.
