Suspected terrorists on Monday carried out coordinated attacks in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, destroying a critical bridge and killing at least eight people in a roadside explosion, further deepening insecurity in the region.

The attackers reportedly bombed a bridge linking Wawa and Luma communities in the early hours of the day, effectively cutting off movement along the route. The destruction has disrupted access to the Babanna border market, a key commercial hub for residents and traders in the area.

Sources disclosed that the assailants also planted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) along the Nuku and Woro road. One of the devices detonated when a vehicle unknowingly ran over it, resulting in the death of all eight occupants.

An eyewitness recounted that the victims, including the driver, died instantly when the explosion occurred, describing the incident as devastating and shocking to the local community.

The latest attacks come barely a week after armed groups reportedly issued threats to communities within the Borgu kingdom.

On March 16, 2026, the attackers allegedly sent letters to three districts, demanding a payment of N150 million from each within two weeks, warning of severe consequences if the demand was not met.

The threat has since triggered widespread fear and displacement, with many residents abandoning their homes for safer locations. Locals say the atmosphere across the affected communities remains tense, as uncertainty continues to grow over possible further attacks.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the people have been living in constant fear since the ultimatum was issued to their traditional leaders, noting that daily activities have been severely disrupted.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies are yet to release an official statement on the incidents. However, the attacks have once again highlighted the persistent security challenges facing rural communities in Niger State and the urgent need for enhanced protection measures.
