Some governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Senators visited two elder statesmen, former heads of state and founding fathers of the PDP on Monday in the process of expanding the party’s consultation and seeking support for international unity. The PDP Governors who include Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State and Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State; and the senators – Senator Gabriel Suswam, Senator Sulaiman Nazif and Senator Olaka Nwogu, held separate consultation meetings former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, and also former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, in Minna, Niger State.
Governor Ikpeazu, Deputy Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, after the closed door meetings, disclosed that the delegation was in Minna to consult with the former Head of State on the preparations to the 2023 general elections.
According to Ikpeazu: “I have come with my colleagues, the Governor of Rivers, Governor of Enugu, Governor of Oyo, some members of the National Assembly and other stakeholders.
“First, to consult with the former Head of State and discuss national issues: economic development, security, and unity of our country.
“And also, to commend him for his support for the unity of this country. And the discussions went very well and we will advance it from there.”
Ikpeazu noted that Babangida expressed strong concerns about the need for younger Nigerians to be courageous in taking up the challenge of providing leadership to the country.
“He expressed concerns and said that he expects the younger generation to take up the gauntlet and rescue Nigeria.”
