Former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has expressed concerns over the inability of some Nigerian political leaders to develop realistic plans and solutions to the country’s challenges.

In a post on his official X account, @kfayemi, Fayemi highlighted the gap between the grand promises made by political candidates during campaigns and the reality they face upon assuming office.

Fayemi pointed out that political leaders often make lofty promises during their campaigns, claiming to know better than those already in power.

However, he stressed that once elected, the challenges of governance and legislation require more than just good intentions.

“When running for office, contestants often claim to know better than those in power, presenting grand visions and promises of swift change if elected,” Fayemi wrote. “Rarely are these claims scrutinized or challenged.

However, winning the election marks the start of a different reality. Governing or legislating means tackling real problems for real people who expect solutions daily.”

He further explained that the work of governance is far from the “campaign poetry” often seen during elections. “Good intentions are not enough—people demand immediate results,” he said.

Fayemi reflected on the complex nature of governance, especially at the subnational level, where leaders in both executive and legislative branches often face heavy expectations that can stretch their capacities.

He emphasized the need for political leaders to be well-prepared and pragmatic in implementing their policies.

Fayemi’s remarks were made during a keynote address on Strengthening Democratic Governance at Subnational Level at a retreat for Southwest Speakers and Principal Officers of State Houses of Assembly in Ikogosi-Ekiti.

During the address, he discussed several critical themes for effective governance, including preparation for public office, securing funding for political agendas, and the importance of implementing tough decisions early in office.

He also touched on the need for effective public communication, gradual state-building, and the importance of leadership continuity. “Governance is a continuum,” he emphasized, urging leaders to focus on sustainable success and a smooth succession process.

Drawing from his experience as a former governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Fayemi stressed the importance of legislative institutions in advancing the welfare of the people.

He noted that effective governance is not only about political leadership but also about the collaboration between lawmakers, bureaucrats, and other key stakeholders.

He also pointed out that public bureaucracy, if not managed properly, can become a barrier to progress. “Wherever a government succeeds in significantly impacting citizens’ lives, the success is often not only due to the quality of its political leadership but also to the effectiveness of legislative decisions and the dedication of bureaucrats implementing those policies,” he stated.

Fayemi stressed the need for political leaders to have a realistic plan, based on wide consultations, to respond to the challenges at both the federal and subnational levels.

He urged leaders to focus on the “how” of implementation, engage the civil service, and prioritize gradual, sustainable improvements over sudden, revolutionary changes.

“Leaders must ensure the sustainability of their efforts through seamless succession,” he said.Continuity of tangible progress requires safeguarding against reversals.”

Fayemi also commended Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye and the Conference of Southwest Speakers for their leadership in organizing the retreat.

He recognized the initiative as a critical step towards legislative reforms and regional cooperation in addressing shared challenges, thereby ensuring that governance at the subnational level remains responsive and robust.
