Nollywood veteran Tony Umez has put an end to the rumours of his death, calling out the individuals behind the malicious reports whilst also affirming that he is alive and well. The actor has expressed his disappointment at those who misuse the power of information to spread fake news, stating that he will take legal action against those who have infringed upon his rights and caused undue distress to his loved ones and fans.
In his statement, Umez urged his followers to only accept information and news that comes directly from him or his official channels, emphasising that the power of social media should not be used for false reporting. The false news of Umez’s death had created ripples across his fan base and the Nollywood industry, but the actor’s clarification has brought relief to many.
Despite the negative impact false news can have, it is unfortunately becoming increasingly common in today’s society. It is important that individuals take responsibility for disseminating news that is factually accurate, whilst also playing a role in cautioning others against spreading falsehoods. The need to be vigilant in verifying the authenticity of news before sharing it cannot be overstated.
Umez’s experience is a reminder that even public figures are not immune to falsehoods on social media. In light of this, it is imperative that social media companies take a more proactive approach in monitoring and regulating false reports, to prevent the unwarranted distress that such reports can cause. However, the conscious efforts of individuals can also go a long way in combating the scourge of fake news.
