Oba Ewuare II revives Edo’s traditional wrestling as highlight of Igue Festival

In a significant nod to Edo State’s cultural heritage, the Royal Palace of Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare II, hosted a revived traditional wrestling competition on Thursday as part of the Igue festival celebrations.

The event, which showcased the vibrancy of traditional Edo culture, drew participants and spectators from across the state.

Athletes from Oredo, Egor, Ikpoba Okha, and Orhionmwon Local Government Areas competed in the wrestling bouts, demonstrating exceptional skill, strength, and dedication to the ancient art.

Ovbokhan Dele of Oredo Local Government emerged victorious in the Junior Category, clinching the gold medal. Meanwhile, Friday Eribo, also representing Oredo, secured a bronze medal in the Senior Category.

The athletes expressed deep appreciation to Oba Ewuare II for his commitment to reviving traditional sports, which they view as an essential aspect of their cultural identity. They also pledged to redouble their efforts and improve their performance in next year’s competition.

Dr. Tom Obaseki, Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council and a notable advocate for sports development, was recognized for his pivotal role in supporting the event.

Hon. Morgan Igunma, the Supervising Counselor for Sports, conveyed the council’s commendation to the athletes, applauding their remarkable performances and competitive spirit.
