The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolopkolo, Ewuare II, on Monday announced the postponement of the fifth anniversary of his coronation in honour of late Captain Idahosa Okunbo.
The Benin Traditional Council, Oba Palace, Benin City, in a statement by the Secretary of the Council, Frank Irabor, notified the general public of the directive of the royal father to postpone the fifth anniversary ceremony in Edo State.
The statement reads: “the Benin Traditional Council on behalf of His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolopkolo, Ewuare II, Oba of Benin, wishes to inform the general public that as a result of the demise of Captain Idahosa Wells Okunbo, and his burial few days ago, His Royal Majesty has directed that all the events lined up to mark the fifth coronation anniversary celebration of His Royal Majesty on 20th October, 2021, should be postponed in honour of the late Captain Hosa Wells Okunbo, who was an illustrious son of Edo State in whom we were well pleased.”
Captain Hosa was a renowned businessman in Edo State and had played assisting roles in the making of leaders in Edo State, including the election of governors. His last assignment for the state was the failed efforts to make Pastor Ize Iyamu Governor of Edo State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2020 governorship election won by Governor Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
