Demola Olarenwaju, the Special Assistant on Digital Media Strategy to former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has revealed what he believes to be the true reason behind the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
According to Olarenwaju, Obasa’s “real crime” was his ambition to contest for the governorship position in Lagos State in the upcoming 2027 election.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Olarenwaju argued that Obasa’s impeachment was not a result of the alleged financial misconduct, as claimed by the All Progressives Congress (APC), but rather due to his political aspirations.
He wrote, “Speaker Obasa’s ‘crime’ wasn’t financial malfeasance which the echelons of APC are all complicit in, it was for daring to nurse and pursue a political ambition.”

Olarenwaju further suggested that, despite the impeachment, Obasa would likely return to the House as a regular member and remain silent moving forward, commenting that the APC in Lagos operates like a “cult.” He added, “Sadly, he will slink back into being a floor member and henceforth keep his mouth shut; because APC Lagos is a cult.”
Obasa was impeached on Monday, January 11, 2025, by members of the Lagos State House of Assembly. In a swift move, Mrs. Mojisola Meranda, the representative for Apapa 1 constituency, was elected to replace him as the new Speaker.
Obasa’s removal comes amid reports and speculation that he has been eyeing the governorship seat in Lagos for the 2027 elections. His impeachment has sparked discussions about the internal politics of the APC and the tensions surrounding political ambitions within the party.
