The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned the driver of a Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) involved in the accident that left two persons dead and injured British heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.

The defendant, identified as Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, a 45-year-old male, was arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting in the Sagamu area of Ogun State.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the police disclosed that Kayode was charged on four counts before Chief Magistrate O.M. Somefun of the Sagamu Magisterial Division.

According to the statement, the charges stem from allegations that the defendant drove the Lexus SUV in a manner considered dangerous to members of the public, leading to a fatal accident that claimed the lives of two persons. The offence, the police said, is punishable under Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2002, as applicable in Ogun State.

The prosecution further accused the defendant of reckless driving, negligence, and driving at excessive speed without due care and reasonable consideration for other road users. These actions, the police alleged, resulted in injuries to Anthony Joshua during the accident.

In addition, Kayode was docked for allegedly driving without a valid National Driver’s Licence, an offence said to be contrary to and punishable under Section 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, as applicable in the state.

After listening to the charges, Chief Magistrate Somefun granted the defendant bail in the sum of N5 million, with two sureties. The court ordered that the defendant be remanded in custody pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions.

The matter has been adjourned to 20 January 2026 for the commencement of trial.
