A tragic road accident involving a truck laden with yam and a commercial tricycle has claimed one life and left three others critically injured at Aiyetoro Junction along the Traffic Light corridor in Epe, Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement, disclosing that the truck, bearing registration number AGL 764 XB and travelling from Ijebu-Ode, attempted a U-turn inward Eleko at the busy junction when the driver reportedly lost control.

The out-of-control vehicle subsequently rammed violently into a stationary tricycle with registration number SMK 127 QR. The impact of the collision was described as devastating, resulting in the immediate death of one occupant and leaving three others with severe injuries.

LASTMA operatives who were on routine traffic management duties in the vicinity swiftly responded to the emergency.

In collaboration with officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and military personnel, rescue efforts were promptly initiated.

The coordinated operation led to the successful extraction of the three critically injured victims from the mangled wreckage. The FRSC conveyed both the deceased and the injured to the General Hospital, Epe, for medical attention and necessary procedures.

Security agencies maintained order at the scene throughout the rescue exercise and worked to restore normal traffic flow along the corridor, which experienced temporary disruption due to the crash.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended his condolences to the bereaved family.

“We pray for the peaceful repose of the departed,” he said, while also wishing the injured victims a speedy recovery.

Bakare-Oki further called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

“We urge security authorities to undertake a comprehensive investigation into the underlying cause of the accident, with a view to ensuring that any individual found culpable faces due legal consequences,” he added.

LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with relevant agencies to enhance road safety and prevent similar tragic occurrences across Lagos State.
