The Owa Obokun of Ijesaland has unveiled the maiden Ijesa Hall of Fame, honoring distinguished sons and daughters of the ancient kingdom who have excelled in various fields both in Nigeria and internationally.
Among those recognized at the prestigious event was UFC middleweight star Israel Adesanya, one of the most successful mixed martial arts fighters in the world and a prominent figure of Ijesa heritage.
Also inducted into the Hall of Fame was a former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), whose identity was not immediately specified in available reports, along with several other prominent indigenes who have made significant contributions to their communities and professions.
The ceremony, which marks the first edition of what is expected to become a regular tradition, was organized to celebrate and immortalize individuals of Ijesa descent who have distinguished themselves in their respective fields and brought honor to the kingdom.
Israel Adesanya, known globally as “The Last Stylebender,” has become one of Nigeria’s most recognizable sports personalities through his achievements in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Born in Nigeria before relocating to New Zealand, Adesanya has maintained strong ties to his Ijesa roots and has frequently acknowledged his Nigerian heritage throughout his career.
The Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, the paramount traditional ruler of the Ijesa people in Osun State, presided over the induction ceremony, which brought together dignitaries, community leaders, and family members of the honorees.
The establishment of the Ijesa Hall of Fame represents an effort to recognize excellence, inspire younger generations, and preserve the legacy of accomplished individuals from the kingdom. It also underscores the global reach and influence of Ijesa indigenes across diverse sectors including sports, military service, business, arts, and public service.
