Palestinian activist, Adnan, dies in prison after 86 days of hunger strike

A Palestinian activist, Khader Adnan, on Tuesday died in prison after 86 days of hunger strike in prison. Adnan was arrested on February 5, 2023, at his residence in Arabba in the occupied West Bank and detained on charges of provocation of violence and being a member of Islamic Jihad.

Khader Adnan has been leading resistance movement in occupied West Bank and has been arrested and detained 12 times in Israeli prison. On each arrest and detention, Adnan often embarks on hunger strike until his regained freedom. This time, he was unlucky, and unfortunately, died at the age of 45 years.

National Daily monitoring event in the troubled occupied West bank on Tuesday morning from Lagos, gathered that there was rising tension in the Gaza Strip as rockets were said to be fired from the zone in expression of anger.

Prisons Service in Israel had disclosed that Khader Adnan was found unconscious in his detention cell on Tuesday morning, the 87th day of detention, and rushed to a hospital, but was declared dead after failed efforts to revive him. The Prisons Service said that Adnan had declined medical assessments or treatment.

As hundreds of Palestinians embarked on protest across the streets in Gaza, Israeli military authorities disclosed that three rockets were fired into Israel from the Gaza Strip.

Israeli authorities denied claims that the late Adnan was denied medical services at civil hospital. The Prisons Service disputed the claims by Jamil Al-Khatib, lawyer to Adnan, and a doctor with a human rights group, that Israeli authorities restrained the activist from assessing medical care.

According to Al-Khatib, “We demanded he be moved into a civilian hospital where he could be properly followed up (on). Unfortunately, such a demand was met by intransigence and rejection.”
