In a spirited debate held on November 3, 2024, Agboola Ajayi, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the upcoming Ondo State governorship election, leveled serious accusations against the incumbent governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ajayi charged that Aiyedatiwa has significantly undermined the legacy of the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, particularly regarding the establishment and functioning of the Amotekun security outfit, a crucial initiative aimed at addressing the region’s security challenges.

Ajayi, who served as Akeredolu’s deputy during his first term, highlighted the deterioration of security in Ondo State since Aiyedatiwa took office.

“What we established under the late governor was not just a local initiative; it was a response to the alarming rise in kidnapping and violence in our region.

Akeredolu had the foresight and courage to create Amotekun as a state-level policing response,” he stated. “Unfortunately, this legacy is being eroded by the current administration.”

During the debate organized by Channels Television, Ajayi emphasized the collective efforts of regional leaders to establish Amotekun, which he described as a necessary and bold step to combat rising insecurity.

“Aiyedatiwa does not grasp the struggles we faced to put Amotekun in place, nor does he seem to care about its improvement,” he asserted.

In response, Governor Aiyedatiwa defended his administration’s security initiatives, pledging to bolster the capabilities of Amotekun if re-elected.

“We will incorporate modern technology and equipment to ensure that our security forces can effectively compete with any outfit globally,” he promised, framing his approach as one that prioritizes both innovation and community safety.

Political analysts have noted the significance of the debate, particularly given the proximity of the election on November 16, 2024. “Security is a critical issue for voters in Ondo State,” said Dr. Bola Oladapo, a political analyst at the University of Ibadan.

“Ajayi’s accusations could resonate with the electorate who have felt the impact of rising crime rates. Aiyedatiwa will need to convincingly address these concerns to secure his position.”
