As nationwide protests erupted on Monday against the proposed Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Electoral Reform Bill, Nigerians on social media have turned their scrutiny toward former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, questioning his conspicuous absence amid intensifying demonstrations at the National Assembly in Abuja.

While Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi was visibly present among the protesters, many users on X (formerly Twitter) openly criticized Atiku and other opposition figures for failing to publicly support the agitation.

Several posts specifically questioned Atiku’s absence. One user, @AsiwajuGbobaniyiAdenola, wrote: “Where is Atiku Abubakar? We will be watching. Nobody will stroll to Aso Rock by God’s special grace. We will make sure it does not happen.” Another user extended the critique to other political figures, asking: “I ask again, where is Atiku, Amaechi, Tambuwal, David Mark, El-Rufai, Emeke Ihedioha, Rauf Aregbesola?”

Commentators also debated Atiku’s stance on the proposed electoral changes, especially in light of reports linking him to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

One post questioned: “Where is @atiku? Or he’s not going to be affected by the Electoral Act if he wins the ADC ticket???” Others contrasted his absence with Peter Obi’s participation: “Mr Peter Obi joins the ongoing protest at the National Assembly in Abuja over the INEC Electoral Reform Bill. Now where is Atiku and the likes??”

Social media users also referenced Atiku’s recent activities abroad. His last X post, made two days ago, showed him in Saudi Arabia hosting former First Lady Hajiya Aisha Buhari and her family during their Umrah visit, describing it as an honor. Reacting to the post, @Timeless remarked: “The last X post from Atiku was from two days ago. He was in Saudi hosting Buhari’s wife and family. He doesn’t even take his ambition seriously?”

Other reactions ranged from mockery to direct calls for his involvement. User @ChineduJoseph wrote: “Where is Atiku?? That man just dey chill for Saudi or Dubai. He’s not a worthy opposition at all.” Meanwhile, @ThievesEverywhere urged, “Call Atiku make e show face for the protest. If na delegate now, he’ll be there before everyone.” Another user, @GovernorOfAfricaX, said, “Atiku isn’t fit to be an opposition leader. He can’t even lead a protest. He’s showing big man.”

As protests against the INEC Electoral Reform Bill continue, public debate over Atiku’s role in opposition politics appears set to remain a major talking point on social media, reflecting heightened expectations for political leaders to be visible and vocal on critical national issues.
