The Delta State Police Command has dismissed widespread claims describing the Ozoro festival as a “rape festival,” clarifying that no victim has officially reported any case of sexual assault linked to the event.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on March 23, the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, stated that investigations conducted so far have not produced any evidence to support the allegations.

According to Edafe, none of the four young women interviewed by the police reported being raped, and no formal complaint has been filed by any alleged victim. He stressed that police investigations are strictly guided by evidence and verified witness accounts.

“Without a complainant or credible evidence to support such claims, the police cannot proceed with an investigation into sexual assault,” he said.

The police spokesperson further explained that the Ozoro festival was not designed to promote sexual violence but is a traditional rite reportedly organized by a chief priest for fertility purposes, particularly to offer prayers for women seeking children.

Despite dismissing the allegations, Edafe confirmed that law enforcement authorities have taken action in connection with the event, revealing that 16 suspects have been arrested as part of ongoing inquiries.

He added that the command remains committed to ensuring public safety and upholding the law, noting that any substantiated claims of wrongdoing would be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.

The clarification comes amid growing public concern and social media reactions surrounding the nature of the festival, with authorities urging the public to rely on verified information while investigations continue.
