The Anambra state Police Command has disclosed that it would henceforth go  after those spreading fake news on social media about the security situation in the state, the spokesperson of the Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, has said.

Ikenga said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Friday that the Command would put a stop to the mischief of such persons.

He said those to be targeted were people who shared false security alerts and messages that affected the peace and smooth flow of businesses in the state.

Ikenga said the mischievous elements had been posting modified old videos of security incidents to cause panic in the state; a situation, he said, was unacceptable.

“It is an attack on public safety which must be resisted,” he said, assuring residents that the Command had improved security dominance and surveillance across the state.

“We are on top of our duties of protection of lives and properties, and we will never take that for granted.”

He said businesses were fully opened on Friday because of the confidence the people had in the security agencies.

“The Police together with other security forces have intensified patrols in the event of any security challenge, and I can attest that business is ongoing in major markets in Anambra, business is also smoothly moving in Nnewi and its environs today July 7.

Ikenga said those trying to instill fear in the people would continue to fail, and urged the public to report any security concerns through the Police Command Control Room number: 07039194332, or the Public Relations Officer on 08039334002.
