A northern support group, UpNorth Ambassadors for Obi/Datti, has embarked on grassroots mobilization of support for the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, urging Nigerians, particularly those at the grassroots to vote massively for Peter Obi, in the 2023 general elections.

Convener of the group, Chigozie Ifeanyi-Chukwu, at the opening of a 3-day workshop for its coordinators across the 19 northern states in Jos on Saturday, said that the workshop,  with the theme ”Leadership Workshop on Strategic Grassroot Mobilisation for Peter Obi”, was in collaboration with Initiative for a Better and Brighter Nigeria (CBBN)

The Convener declared: “Because of the task that lies ahead of us, we decided to put together this strategic workshop with the aim of increasing our campaign for Peter Obi at the grassroots.

“We have started moving into the corners of this country, particularly the hard-to-reach communities in the North East and North West, and so, we felt there is need for us to sensitise our coordinators in order to strategically canvass votes for Peter Obi.

“This group is largely made up of young people who are deeply concerned and passionate about changing the state of things in this country for the better.

“We believe Peter Obi has all it takes to move this nation forward; we believe that with Obi as president of this country, Nigeria will be great and this is why we will go into the crannies and hinterlands to canvass votes for him.”

Ifeanyi-Chukwu explained that the group depends on free-will donations from spirited individuals and organisations for funding its activities, calling on other spirited Nigerians to support the movement.

Joseph Umbugadu,  Head, Mobilisation, Strategy and Planning of the group, said  that their support for Obi was borne out of their conviction that he would better the lots of Nigerians if elected in 2023.

He said the group had put modalities that would checkmate and hold Obi accountable after becoming the president.

According to Umbugadu, “We are not a group that will support a candidate and go to sleep after he wins.

“We will follow up and be more active after the elections; we will keep a check on the  government to ensure that those we supported are doing the right thing.

“If Peter Obi wins, we will not be quiet if he fails. We will be at the forefront to challenge him if he decides to do otherwise.”
