The demonstration against economic hardship at Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, was abruptly halted on Saturday after security forces fired upon protesters and journalists.
The incident occurred after protesters refused to confine their demonstration within the stadium as ordered by authorities.
Since the nationwide protests began on August 1, security operatives had insisted that the demonstrations be restricted to the stadium premises, a directive rejected by the protesters.
Addressing the crowd before the escalation, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ishaku Ishaku dismissed allegations that security forces had used tear gas against demonstrators earlier in the week.
“The court order is very clear. The court has confined protesters to the premises of the Moshood Abiola Stadium,” Ishaku stated. “If they are law abiding, they should obey the court order. We have not tear-gassed anybody within the premises of the national stadium.”

Despite these assurances, protesters continued their demonstration outside the stadium, waving placards with their demands. Tensions escalated when police fired tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd following the departure of DCP Ishaku.
Shortly after, a group of masked men, believed to be operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), arrived on the scene and began shooting at individuals in the vicinity. A vehicle belonging to a reporter from Premium Times was damaged during the incident.
The #EndBadGovernance protests, which have spread across Nigeria, have resulted in the deaths of over 14 people. Amnesty International has called on the government to investigate the killings and the “highhandedness” of security forces involved in the crackdowns.
