Tension erupted on Tuesday at the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) office in Isolo, Lagos, following protests over the agency’s recent ban on sachet alcoholic beverages, leading to clashes, heated exchanges, and major traffic disruptions in the area.

The situation began when hundreds of workers from beverage manufacturing companies stormed the NAFDAC office to protest the ban, which they said threatens their jobs and the survival of small- and medium-scale producers in the sector.

The protesters, many chanting slogans and carrying placards, warned that the policy could lead to mass layoffs and economic hardship for thousands of families who depend on the sachet alcohol value chain.

As the protest progressed, counter-protesters arrived at the scene to express support for NAFDAC’s decision, arguing that the ban was necessary to protect public health, particularly among young people and vulnerable populations.

The presence of opposing groups heightened tensions, resulting in confrontations and a charged atmosphere around the facility.

The unrest caused significant traffic congestion along major routes in Isolo, as commuters and motorists were forced to seek alternative routes amid the standoff.

Security operatives were deployed to the area to maintain order and prevent the situation from escalating further.

Authorities said they are closely monitoring developments and have urged all parties to remain calm.

Meanwhile, calls are growing for constructive dialogue between regulators, manufacturers, labour unions, and other stakeholders to address concerns over job losses, public health, and the broader economic implications of the ban.

NAFDAC has maintained that the policy is part of its long-term strategy to regulate alcohol consumption and reduce associated health and social risks, while affected workers and industry players continue to push for a review or phased implementation of the decision.
