With one of the most eagerly anticipated Premier League fixtures in years just days away, England legend Wayne Rooney has declared that Manchester City will carry a psychological advantage into their potential title-deciding clash against Arsenal, a match he believes could determine who lifts the Premier League trophy this season.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the former Manchester United and England captain said that whoever wins the upcoming clash in Manchester will be favourites to win the league, describing it as a “title decider.” He also suggested that a draw would be a “good point” for Arsenal, who may need to “play dirty.”

“I think City will have the edge on that, just purely the manager and players they’ve got. They will be able to stay a little calmer than the Arsenal players,” Rooney said. “They will be worried because when you go on a run and lose a few games, you start thinking ‘where’s the next goal, the next win going to come from?’ That negative mindset really has an impact on your performance.”

He also outlined what Mikel Arteta’s side must do tactically to get a result at the Etihad. Rooney said Arsenal must “be tough to break down, make sure there’s no gaps between the lines and try to hit them on the break.”

Arsenal are now just six points clear at the top of the Premier League, following their damaging 2-1 home defeat to AFC Bournemouth on Saturday and Manchester City’s 2-0 win at Chelsea on Sunday. According to the current standings, Arsenal sit on 70 points from 32 games while City have 64 points from 31 games, with the Citizens holding a game in hand.

The showdown between the top two is scheduled for Sunday, April 19, at the Etihad Stadium. If Manchester City were to beat Arsenal and both clubs were to win all of their other matches, the title would come down to goal difference.

It has been more than 22 years since Arsenal last won the Premier League title, their famous unbeaten “Invincibles” season of 2003–04 and the weight of that wait is palpable as Mikel Arteta’s side approach the most consequential weeks of their campaign.

City’s Momentum and Rooney’s Evolving Assessment

Rooney’s current assessment represents a notable shift from his earlier position this season. Just weeks ago, following Man City’s Carabao Cup final victory over Arsenal at Wembley, Rooney had said: “I think Arsenal are too good, too efficient and too strong defensively to let it slip from here.” He had estimated City would need to win every game while Arsenal dropped seven points, a “tough ask,” he said at the time.

Rooney had also expressed admiration for City manager Pep Guardiola, saying he “knows how to win the title” and has “been successful in a similar way” to what he achieved at Bayern Munich, suggesting Guardiola’s experience could prove decisive in the run-in.

Arsenal’s remaining fixtures include their Champions League quarter-final second leg at home against Sporting CP on Wednesday, April 15, before the pivotal Etihad trip on April 19. After the City game, the Gunners face Newcastle United, Fulham, West Ham, Burnley, and Crystal Palace on the final matchday, a run that looks considerably more manageable on paper.

After their match against Arsenal, City face Burnley, Everton, Brentford, Bournemouth, and Aston Villa. a run that includes some tricky tests and ends with a potentially demanding final-day fixture against the Champions League-chasing Villa side.

With six points the gap and the Etihad showdown just one week away, the 2025–26 Premier League title race has arrived at its most consequential moment and Wayne Rooney believes the team with ice in their veins will prevail.
