Armed militant group operating in the Bakassi Peninsula and the Gulf of Guinea at the weekend engaged personnel of the Nigerian Navy in exchange of gunfire at the border of Bakassi Peninsula into the Cameroon. The militants lost one member of the group in the confrontation with the security operatives.
It was gathered that the gunmen struck on sighting the joint border patrol team in the territory.
The armed militants were said to be migrating from the Nigerian border territory when they confronted the border security team to enable them move into the Cameroonian controlled territory of the Peninsula which accommodates oil installations.
While the identity of the militants that confronted the border security was not immediately known,the militants are suspected to be members of the Black Marine, the military wing of the Biafra Nations Leagues, a group fighting for the Biafra state.
The Biafra Nations League was said to have in a media interaction a fortnight ago in Calabar, Cross River State, issued the Nigerian government an ultimatum to set Nnamdi Kanu, leader of IPOB, free; extending same ultimatum to the Cameroonian military to withdraw their troops from the Bakassi Peninsula.
The national leader of Biafra Nations League, Princewill Richards, was cited to have in a media interaction warned that the consequences of the two governments undermining their demands “could lead to complete shutdown of maritime border and the oil installations by BnL supporters.
The Black Marine of the Biafra Nations Leagues has overtime been involved in violent operations in the Bakassi Peninsula, confronted the Cameroonian military at different times, including the Nigerian security operatives.
