Danny Jordaan, the President of the South African Football Association (SAFA), was arrested on Wednesday over allegations that he misused the organization’s funds for personal gain.

Local media reports indicate that Jordaan, who played a pivotal role in securing South Africa’s hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, faces charges related to the improper use of SAFA’s resources.

Jordaan had attempted to block his imminent arrest by seeking an interdict on Tuesday, but the Johannesburg High Court is not scheduled to hear his application until Thursday.

According to South African Police spokesperson Katlego Mogale, the arrest is the result of a raid conducted on the SAFA offices in March 2024.

The police allege that, between 2014 and 2018, Jordaan misappropriated SAFA’s funds by using the association’s resources for personal purposes.

Specifically, he is accused of hiring a private security company for his personal protection and engaging a public relations firm, all without the necessary authorization from the SAFA board.

Jordaan, who is 73 years old, is facing charges alongside his reported co-accused: SAFA’s Chief Financial Officer, Gronie Hluyo, and businessman Trevor Neethling.

The three individuals are expected to appear in court later on Wednesday.

Neither Jordaan nor SAFA have issued any public statements in response to the allegations. However, in an affidavit filed in court, Jordaan denies any wrongdoing, claiming that the charges are unfounded.
