Shehu Sani, a former Kaduna lawmaker and member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has listed five northern states that would be directly affected if ECOWAS, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, declares war on Niger Republic. He expressed his concerns on social media in response to ECOWAS’s statement proposing military intervention in Niger Republic.

During an impromptu meeting in Abuja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led ECOWAS issued a one-week ultimatum to the coupists in Niger Republic, demanding the reinstallation of President Muhammed Bazoum, or face military intervention. This decision sparked widespread discussions among Nigerians.

In his reaction, Shehu Sani opposed the idea of military intervention, warning that it could have adverse consequences for Nigeria in the long run. He took to Twitter and shared “Thirteen reasons why Nigeria must not support armed invasion,” emphasizing that five northern Nigerian states, namely Sokoto, Yobe, Katsina, Jigawa, and Zamfara, would bear the brunt due to their proximity to Niger.

Sani’s concerns center around the potential backlash and negative repercussions for Nigeria if ECOWAS goes ahead with military action. He believes that such an approach may lead to unintended consequences and put northern Nigerian states at risk, particularly those geographically close to Niger.
