An employee of TAJ Bank Limited, Janet Theophilus Danjuma, has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment without the option of a fine by a Federal High Court in Kano State for defrauding an investor of N22.35 million.
Justice S. M. Shuaibu, presiding over the case at the Federal High Court, Kano, convicted Danjuma following her arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The defendant had been arraigned on February 16, 2026, on a one-count charge of obtaining money by false pretence.
According to the EFCC, Danjuma, who worked at the Nai’bawa Branch of TAJ Bank, obtained N22,350,000 from a victim, Wade Bamaiyi, under the pretext that the funds would be invested in the bank’s CASA Program. Instead, she allegedly diverted the money for personal use.
The anti-graft agency stated that Danjuma’s actions constituted an offense under Section 1(1)(b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006, punishable under Section 1(3) of the same law.

During the proceedings, Danjuma pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to her. The prosecuting counsel, Sadiq Huseini, presented the details of the case, explaining how the defendant exploited the reputation of a legitimate bank product to deceive her victim. He urged the court to convict her in accordance with the law.
Consequently, Justice Shuaibu sentenced Danjuma to five years in a correctional centre, emphasizing that the sentence carried no option of fine.
The EFCC commended the court’s judgment, noting that the ruling serves as a deterrent to financial fraud and underscores the agency’s commitment to protecting investors and maintaining integrity in Nigeria’s banking sector.
