Terrorism: UN Security Council Mission visits Nigeria

The United Nations Security Council Mission to Lake Chad Basin Region is expected to visit Maiduguri, Borno State on Sunday.
National Daily learnt that the Mission will also visit Acting President Prof Yemi Osibajo in Abuja on Monday.
It was learnt that the mission to Nigeria is aimed at enabling the UN body to get firsthand information on the various issues affecting the country.
Spokesperson and Head of Communications, UK Mission to the UN, Matt Moody, said: “On Day 5 of the UK Presidency, the Security Council will transfer to Maiduguri, Nigeria.
“On Day 6 of the UK Presidency (Monday), the Security Council will meet Civil Society Organisations, Women’s Groups, and leaders of the Nigerian Government in Abuja.”
It was gathered that the visit is part of the UN Security Council’s mission under the UK Presidency, to the areas decimated by Boko Haram terrorists especially in the Lake Chad Basin – Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger.
Also, the delegation is expected to engage journalists for a press parley in Maiduguri at 5 pm on Sunday and in Abuja at 7 pm on Monday.
The delegation is led by Amb. Matthew Rycroft, UK Permanent Representative to the UN and the Security Council’s President for the month of March.
Other countriies they have visited is Cameroon and Chad and would leave for Niger on Saturday night.
The UN said that an estimated 300,000 children in Borno alone will suffer from severe acute malnutrition over the next 12 months and about 450,000 would suffer similar faith in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.
