Three die, houses set ablaze in Oba hereditary violence in Ogun

The violent confrontation over the selection of a new king in Agosasa community in the Ipokia Local Government Area, Ogun State, has led to the killing of three people, and the burning of houses and cars.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Ogun State Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, acknowledged the violent outburst, disclosing that the violent outburst was caused by lingering skirmishes over who should be the new king after the death of the last traditional ruler of the town six months ago.

The conflict was said to be caused by disagreement over adhering to traditional process in selecting the new king, as some questioned the entrenched culture.

A particular aspirant for the throne was said to have secured statutory documents to succeed the late king and therefore, opposes adherent to due process.

The PPRO disclosed that houses and vehicles burnt during the violent outburst are owned by Akeem Adigun and Isiaka Aderounmu, a former council chairman.

While disclosing that normalcy has returned to the community, and persons arrested, the PPRO wanted residents of the community to eschew from resorting to jungle justice in expressing their grievances, urging them to seek legal redress while relying on the approved system for resolving chieftaincy crisis.
