Political thugs on Monday gathered at the venue of the Governorship Election petition Tribunal in Ogun State, where they were said to have attacked a governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, Segun Sowunmi, at the entrance to the tribunal’s premises. Sowunmi was said to be rounded by the fierce-looking thugs at the entrance gate to the court as he was introducing himself to the security agents at the gate on arrival for the tribunal’s sitting. The thugs were said to have attacked him with sticks, forcing him flee for safety.
The presence of thugs at the venue of the Ogun State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Isabo amidst heavy security, on Monday as caused chaos in the vicinity.
The tribunal was said to have commenced hearing of the petition filed by the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ladi Adebutu, challenging the election of Governor Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
While the road leading to the venue of the tribunal’s sitting in the premises of the magistrates’ court at Isabo was condoned off by a combined team of security operatives, thugs stormed the arena in large numbers to support their political parties.
Supporters of the APC and the PDP were said to have clashed at the scene; some thugs were said to be holding canes in the confrontation. minor
however, the armed security operatives, who include the police, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), had intervened to disperse the thugs and restored normalcy at the venue.
The security personnel further stopped political supporters from going into the venue of the sitting to avoid disruption of proceedings.
