President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a “towering influence” whose contributions will continue to shape Nigeria, Africa, and the wider global community.

Tinubu made the remark while congratulating the elder statesman on his 89th birthday, praising his long-standing role in national and continental affairs.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Nigerian leader expressed delight at the milestone and joined family, associates, and admirers in celebrating the former president.

According to the statement, Tinubu shared in the joy of the former leader, whose impact on Nigeria and Africa has remained significant over several decades of public service.

The president highlighted Obasanjo’s distinguished leadership history, noting that he first served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1976 to 1979, before handing over power to a civilian government in 1979—an act widely regarded as a major step toward democratic governance in the country.

Tinubu also recalled that Obasanjo later returned to power as the first civilian president of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, leading the country from 1999 to 2007 after years of military rule.

Beyond his leadership roles, the president acknowledged the former leader’s experiences and sacrifices in service to the nation. These, he said, include leading troops to defend Nigeria’s unity during the civil war, enduring imprisonment for speaking out against authoritarian rule, and consistently advocating for Africa’s political and economic advancement.

As Obasanjo marks his 89th birthday, Tinubu also commended his enduring contributions to national discourse through his writings and continued engagement in public affairs, which he said demonstrate a deep commitment to Nigeria’s development.

The president further offered prayers for the elder statesman, wishing him many more years of good health, strength, and wisdom as he continues to contribute to the progress of Nigeria and the global community.
