A tragic road accident has claimed the life of a nine-year-old girl in Akungba-Akoko, Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The incident occurred on Sunday at Supare Junction along Supare Road in Akungba-Akoko, a university community known for its busy traffic corridors.

Confirming the development on Monday in Akure, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the young victim was knocked down by an unregistered Mercedes-Benz tipper truck.

“The Police Command in Ondo State regrets to confirm a fatal motor accident in Akungba-Akoko, resulting in the death of a 9-year-old girl,” Jimoh stated.

According to him, the child was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital after the crash but was pronounced dead by a medical doctor.

Jimoh disclosed that the driver of the truck has been arrested and taken into custody, while the vehicle involved has been recovered by the police for inspection.

He added that a thorough investigation has commenced to determine the exact circumstances that led to the accident and to ensure accountability.

“The command commiserates with the family of the deceased and assures the public that justice will be served,” he said.

The police spokesperson further urged motorists to exercise caution and strictly adhere to traffic regulations to prevent avoidable tragedies on the roads.

The incident has reportedly sparked concern among residents of Akungba-Akoko, particularly over the movement of heavy-duty trucks within populated areas.

Authorities say findings from the ongoing investigation will guide further legal action in the case.
