Panic swept through one of Ibadan’s busiest commercial corridors on Tuesday after a truck lost control and ploughed into several vehicles and pedestrians along the Beere–Oja Oba Road in the heart of the Oyo State capital, with multiple casualties feared.

The truck reportedly lost control and rammed into several vehicles and pedestrians along the road. According to video footage cited by correspondents, citizens were seen gathering at the scene, attempting to rescue victims trapped in the wreckage, while residents and passersby raised alarm, urgently calling for emergency services to respond to the situation.

The full scale of the tragedy remained unclear as of Tuesday afternoon, with no official casualty figures released by the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Road Safety Corps, or the Nigeria Police Force at the time of this report.

The Beere–Oja Oba axis is one of Ibadan’s most heavily trafficked routes, running through a densely populated area that is typically filled with commuters, street traders, motorcyclists, and pedestrians throughout the day. The road connects the Beere district, a major transport hub in the city to Oja Oba, Ibadan’s ancient central market, making it a constant artery of commercial and human activity. A loss-of-control incident on such a stretch, particularly during business hours, raises the prospect of significant harm to road users and bystanders alike.

The cause of the truck’s loss of control had not been officially confirmed, though brake failure and overspeeding are among the most common contributing factors in similar incidents across Nigeria’s urban road network.

Tuesday’s incident is the latest in a troubling series of heavy-vehicle accidents across the country. Earlier in the day, a separate crash on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near Christopher University claimed the life of a woman who had just returned from the United Kingdom, while two others in the same vehicle sustained injuries.

Nigeria’s road safety record remains a persistent national concern. The Federal Road Safety Corps consistently identifies brake failure, overloading, and poorly maintained vehicles as leading causes of crashes involving commercial trucks and articulated vehicles in urban centres.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Oyo State government, the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency, nor the FRSC had issued a formal statement on the Beere–Oja Oba incident. It was also unclear whether the truck driver was apprehended at the scene or whether law enforcement had commenced an investigation.

This is a developing story. Further details on casualties, the identity of the truck, and the official emergency response are expected as authorities confirm information on the ground.
