Twitter has reinstated the account of Donald Trump, former US president nearly two years after he was banned from the social media handle.

Trump’s Twitter account was banned in January 2021 following the post-2020 presidential election crisis, where a mob of his supporters attacked the Capitol in Washington, D.C.

The account was restored after Elon Musk, Twitter CEO and new owner, posted a poll on Twitter on Friday asking the platform’s users if Trump should be reinstated.

The final poll results on Saturday showed 51.8 percent voted in favour and 48.2 percent opposed the reinstatement. The poll had over 15 million votes.

“The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated,” Musk tweeted after the poll result. Vox Populi, Vox Dei.” — A Latin word meaning “the voice of the people is the voice of God.”

Trump is yet to tweet or comment on the reinstatement.

The development is coming days after the former president announced that he will seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2024. During his term at the White House, Trump used Twitter as a key messaging platform to engage with several controversial tweets.

Currently, Trump is the target of multiple investigations into his conduct before, during and after his first term as president.

These include allegations of fraud by his family business, his role in last year’s attack on the US Capitol, his attempt to overturn the 2020 elections, and the stashing of classified documents at his residence at Mar-a-Lago.

Many observers, including some Republicans, have questioned whether the former president is the right candidate for the party.
