At least two police officers were killed, and three others injured following an attack by members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as Shi’ites, at Wuse Junction in Abuja on Sunday.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the attack, describing it as unprovoked and targeted at police personnel stationed at a checkpoint.

According to Adeh, the attackers were armed with machetes, improvised explosive devices (locally made bombs in bottles with kerosene), and knives.

“The violent assault left two police officers dead and three others unconscious, currently receiving treatment in hospital. In addition to the human casualties, three police patrol vehicles were set ablaze during the attack,” she said.

Despite the severity of the incident, the police assured the public that the situation had been brought under control and normalcy restored in the area.

The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth C. Igweh, condemned the attack and vowed to bring those responsible to justice, stating that several arrests had already been made in connection with the incident. Further developments will be communicated as the investigation progresses.
