Two teenagers drown while fleeing suspected phone snatchers in Kano

Tragedy struck in Kano metropolis after two teenagers reportedly lost their lives when they fell into a pond while attempting to escape from individuals suspected to be phone snatchers.

The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi.

According to Abdullahi, the incident occurred on Monday around the Ring Road Kureken Sani area in the Kumbotso axis of Kano.

The victims were identified as 18-year-old Sadiq Isyaku and Auwal Isyaku, who reportedly fell into the pond while trying to escape from individuals believed to be phone snatchers chasing them.

Abdullahi explained that preliminary findings indicated the teenagers were attempting to evade the suspected criminals when they accidentally slipped and plunged into the water.

“Preliminary information revealed that the youths were trying to escape from suspected phone snatchers when they accidentally fell into the pond,” he said.

Emergency responders from the fire service were later alerted and mobilised to the scene. However, by the time the victims were recovered from the pond, they were already unconscious. They were subsequently confirmed dead.

The spokesperson added that the bodies of the deceased were later handed over to their father, Ibrahim Shehu, a resident of Unguwa Uku.

The fire service extended its condolences to the bereaved family and urged members of the public to remain vigilant and prioritise safety in their daily activities.

“We sympathise with the bereaved family and call on members of the public to remain vigilant and prioritise safety at all times,” Abdullahi stated.
