The fans of the Champions League holders Chelsea joyfully watched their Quarter final opponents Real Madrid suffered an embarrassing 4-0 defeat at home to their El Clasico rivals Barcelona at the weekend.

Many have since tipped Chelsea to enjoy a repeat of last season’s victory over the Spanish giants when the Blues defeated Real 3-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals on their way to lift the trophy.

Confident on Chelsea’s victory over Madrid when they face off in the Quarter final is former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit.

When asked if Chelsea can beat Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final tie, former Blues midfielder Petit told Lord Ping: ‘Of course they can.

‘Did you watch the El Clasico? I was at the game [against PSG] and it appeared PSG were the better team in both games and should have scored at least five or six goals.

‘This is exactly what Barcelona did – and when you look at Chelsea they have so many players who can hurt you in their team.

‘I know it’s Real Madrid and the history of the club but I’m pretty sure that Chelsea will go through.’

Interestingly for Chelsea fans, their team has recently maintained an impressive run of forms despite the ongoing uncertainty at Stamford Bridge as a result of sanctions placed on the club owner Roman Abramovich.

‘I have never seen it before in football,’ ex-France star Petit added. ‘If I was in the dressing room maybe I would ask myself questions but not too far because I have money in my bank.

‘My thoughts go straight to all the people working in the back stage. They are feeling high pressure for the future.

‘I can sympathise with the managers and players but there are some limits because it doesn’t impact their lives.’

While Chelsea will return from the international break to a west London derby clash against Brentford on April 2, Real Madrid will return with a visit to Celta Vigo where they aim to maintain or extend their nine points lead on the La Liga table.
