Update: Dissident Presidential Guards detain Niger President Mohamed Bazoum

The Presidential Guard has detained the President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum,in compliance with an “ultimatum” by the army commander in the country.

A source in the Niger Presidency had said that dissident members of the Presidential Guard had sealed access route to the president’s residence and offices, and after talks broke down they “refused to release the president.” The source maintained that: “The army has given them an ultimatum.”

The president’s office had in a twitter message stated that “elements of the Presidential Guard (PG) had a fit of temper… (and) tried unsuccessfully to gain the support of the national armed forces and the national guard.”

“The army and national guard are ready to attack the elements of the PG who are involved in this fit of temper if they do not return to a better disposition.”

The message further indicated that “The president and his family are well.”
