A disturbing video circulating on social media has drawn fresh attention to the plight of two young women reportedly abducted by terrorists in Zamfara State last month, with concerns mounting over the delay in securing their release.

The footage, shared on X by user Augustine Mario, shows the two women in captivity. In his accompanying post, Mario alleged that the victims were travelling from Zamfara to their school in Sokoto when they were abducted.

He identified one of the victims as Maryam, stating that she has been held for over a month since the incident.

“Maryam has been in captivity for the past one month; she was travelling to school from Zamfara to Sokoto. It is disheartening how banditry has been normalised and human beings are being priced like animals,” he wrote.

Mario further alleged that the victims have been subjected to abuse while in captivity and expressed frustration over what he described as a lack of decisive action against those responsible.

The emergence of the video has reignited public concern over insecurity in Zamfara and surrounding states, where cases of abduction for ransom have become recurrent in recent years. Families of victims often face prolonged uncertainty as they await intervention by security agencies.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from security authorities confirming the identities of the victims or providing updates on rescue efforts.

The incident underscores the continuing security challenges in parts of northern Nigeria, particularly along inter-state routes frequently targeted by armed groups.

Civil society advocates have repeatedly called for strengthened intelligence operations, improved protection for travellers and students, and swift response mechanisms to address abductions.

Concerned citizens have urged the relevant authorities to intensify efforts to secure the safe return of the young women and prevent further incidents along the Zamfara–Sokoto corridor.
