Former Chelsea defender William Gallas has said the lack of experienced players in the current Chelsea team may cost the premiership giant the league title.

According to the former France international, Mauricio Pochettino’s side lacks experience throughout the team, noting that Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia are players for the future.

He said that Chelsea need to bring in experienced players to help the midfielders and the young players in the squad succeed now.

Gallas, a former Arsenal defender, also pointed out that Caicedo has a lot to prove after his arrival for a British transfer record.

Gallas told Genting Casino: “He signing for Chelsea is great, but at the same time there was the potential to have looked at players with more experience. The policy of Chelsea is to take on the best young players in the world at the moment.

“With only young players, you cannot win the Premier League, as you need experience. Chelsea will not win the Premier League this season. The signings of Lavia and Caicedo are good, but they are for the future.”

William Eric Gallas (born 17 August 1977) is a French former professional footballer who played as a defender.

While his career has been successful, including Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006, Gallas has also had controversy due to on-field behaviour and friction with other personnel.

In 2007, he was named Arsenal’s captain, but was removed from the role during the 2008–09 season after criticising teammates in a media interview. He left Arsenal at the end of the 2009–10 season, when his contract expired, later signing for rivals Tottenham.

He was released at the end of the 2012–13 season when his contract expired. He retired from professional football on 16 October 2014.
