Apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, on Tuesday, lamented worries the sustained IPOB’s sit-at-home order Mondays is bleeding the southeast.
While it is okay to fret in situations, fudging figures might not help.
The group said the region has lost over N3 trillion in five Mondays alone as business activities grind to a halt because citizens sit at home.
In a statement by the Ohanaeze Secretary-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the group said the developments were heartbreaking.
“Ndigbo have lost almost N3.8 trillion in all facets of economic and social activities due to this absurdity,” the group said.
How Ohaneze arrived at that figure is not clear.
But per internally generated revenues the order has impacted, the Ohaneze figure is hammed up.
All the states of the federation and the FCT made N1.3 trillion in 2020, accoring to the Ngeria Bureau of Statistics. Lagos alone raked in more than 30 percent of this, followed by Rivers, Delta and Kaduna.
Amidst the general insecurity in southeast, business activities still take place on days other than Mondays.
However, the effect is noticeable.
“This must be terminated instantly for our survival,” the group said.
Ohaneze said it backs the state governments sacking all market leaders in the southeast who are supporting the sit-at-home order.
“A time has come for an emergency meeting with Igbo Town Union Administrators, market leaders and other pro-Biafra agitators whose conducts are in line with Igbo interests.
“We should not fold our hands and allow for a total destruction of the South-East; our enemies are already holding a tea party and we should not allow it to continue.”
