11 injured in shipping accident in Germany’s Hamburg

Eleven people were injured, including one with life-threatening injuries, when a transport vessel collided with a ferry on the Elbe River in Hamburg, Germany, on Monday morning, the city’s fire brigade reported.

The incident occurred around 6:43 a.m. (0543 GMT) near the Köhlbrand Bridge in south-western Hamburg.

A total of 25 people were impacted by the collision, with the injured being treated at the scene.

According to a fire brigade spokesman, the transport vessel, a barge, had come loose before the collision.

However, the exact cause of the vessel’s detachment remains unclear.

Barges are flat-bottomed boats typically used for transporting goods along canals and rivers.

Hamburg, located about 100 kilometers from the North Sea, is Germany’s largest seaport and one of the busiest in Europe, with the Elbe River ,Hamburg  playing a crucial role in its shipping operations.

The fire brigade continues to investigate the cause of the incident.
